#OnThisDay โ€“ In 1961, a B-52 bomber crashed in North Carolina. The aircraft was on a โ€˜โ€˜Cover Allโ€™โ€™ mission, preceeding Operation Chrome Dome. Two bombs yielding a nuclear power 250 times greater than Hiroshima, fell into the tobacco fields of Wayne County.

#OnThisDay โ€“ In 1968, an U.S. aircraft carrying a B-52 bomber, part of Operation Chrome Dome, crashed near Thule Air Base in the Wholsstenhole Fjord, Greenland. This marked the end of Operation Chrome Dome, initiated by the U.S. to deter any nuclear attack from the Soviet Union.

#OnThisDayโ€“ In 1966, an American Boeing B-52G bomber collided mid-air with a Boeing KC-135 tanker, causing both planes to crash near the Spanish village of Palomares. The Boeing B-52G carried four thermonuclear hydrogen bombs, which also fell to the ground.
