According to the scarce historical accounts we have on the subject, the story of the Roman state ended exactly 550 years ago today, on 5 December 1475. Following a three-month-long Ottoman siege, the Lordship of the City of Theodoro and the Maritime Region (Αὐθεντία πόλεως Θεοδωροῦς καὶ παραθαλασσίας), the final medieval Roman remnant still standing, only 17 years before Christopher Columbus made his landfall in the Americas in 1492, was captured by Gedik Ahmed Pasha. Alexander Gabras of Theodoro, the Crimean principality’s final ruler, was captured, taken to the Ottoman capital, and beheaded. Gabras belonged to a branch of an old medieval Roman aristocratic family first mentioned in 976. The Roman state had an intermittent presence on the Crimean Peninsula (Chersonesus Taurica) for 1,522 years, from the death of Pharnaces II to the fall of Theodoro. The Lordship of the City of Theodoro and the Maritime Region was a regular part of the Empire on 13 April 1204 when Constantinople fell during the Fourth Crusade. It remained free of Crusader and Venetian conquest, and was ruled from unconquered Trebizond until that city fell to the Ottomans in 1461. Theodoro was a unique part of the medieval Roman world where one could find not only Greeks, but also linguistically Hellenized and denominationally Eastern Orthodox Germanic Goths, Alans, Circassians, Bulgars (the original non-Slavic group bearing that name), Cumans, and Kipchaks. The 5,300 Crimean defenders of the Doros citadel were a sizable force (7,000 defended Constantinople for 53 days in 1453). Despite repeated calls for help to European capitals against the Ottomans, Stephen III of Moldavia (part of modern-day Romania) was the only foreign monarch who answered Theodoro’s call during the final Ottoman invasion. All Moldavian soldiers (500 troops) who sailed to Crimea to help died in the final siege. Let us remember today what we lost 550 years ago to the day - not just Theodoro, but the final flame of the Roman state itself.
