On this day in 2014, Harvey Milk became the first out gay elected official to be honoured on a United States postal stamp. Democrat Harvey Milk became the state of California’s first out gay elected official in January 1978. He served as a member of the San Francisco Board of Supervisors until November of the same year, when he and city mayor George Moscone were assassinated by Dan White inside San Francisco City Hall. Speaking at the dedication ceremony for the Harvey Milk Forever Stamp, Deputy Postmaster General Ronald Stroman said: “Let this stamp remind us of the fundamental truth behind Mr. Milk’s message – that we all have a stake in equality.
