A newly discovered fossil ape from northern Egypt is reshaping the understanding of early hominoid evolution, researchers report in Science. The fossil finding suggests that the closest ancestors to modern apes may have emerged in northern Africa, outside the traditionally studied regions of East Africa. scim.ag/4szvRIS

Do humans share a sense of acoustic beauty with other animals? According to a new study in Science, the answer may be yes. In a global citizen-science experiment, researchers show that humans tend to prefer many of the same animal sounds that animals themselves favor—findings that offer support for Charles Darwin’s longstanding idea that different species can share a “taste for the beautiful.” Learn more: scim.ag/40GkvGQ

On Peru’s arid coast, some ancient elites signaled their power and standing by wearing headdresses festooned with brilliantly colored feathers from birds found in distant rainforests. A new study reveals how they acquired these showy ornaments more than 800 years ago: from wild Amazonian parrots captured hundreds of kilometers away in the Amazon and transported, live, high over the Andes. Using whole-genome data from 418 koalas drawn from 27 populations across Australia, researchers in Science have found that, although koalas endured severe population decline and genetic bottleneck that left them with low genetic diversity, populations now show signs of genetic recovery. The findings suggest that this rebound may be driven in part by recombination, which shuffles existing genetic material into new combinations, helping to restore functional diversity as populations expand. scim.ag/3OL2jcs
