At the time, he saw it as bootlegging, something that was hurting his money. Unofficial mixtapes were everywhere, especially on DatPiff, where Wayne tapes were dominating the charts. But shortly after, he had a realization… Those mixtapes weren’t hurting him, they were building him. Expanding his reach, growing his fanbase, and turning him into a global force. He leaned into the culture, embraced it, and even apologized to KP and DatPiff, admitting he didn’t understand it at first. That shift changed everything. Without it, “Mixtape Weezy” would’ve never existed. From there, Wayne and DatPiff released 5 projects together, along with 14 releases across Young Money over the next decade. A reminder that sometimes what looks like a problem… is actually the opportunity.
