Extreme Picky Eating

If you didn’t know, “re-presentation of expelled food”, ie., often vomit, is a behavioral (ABA) method used in feeding clinics by therapists while they restrain children. Criminal charges filed here & yet no one blinks an eye when the same is done under the guise of “therapy”.

@WassermansBeat @v_solesmith The first thing I ask former NICU parents when they walk in my door is “How are YOU doing? Have you connected with a therapist?” In order to be the best parent you can be, you have to be OKAY. And NICU parents most definitely are NOT.

This resonated with me on a professional level. The medical community, therapists, & clinicians all need to take care with our words—they can truly harm an already exhausted, traumatized parent who is doing the best they can. Parents are doing the hard work & need support!

@slouisepetersen @v_solesmith Loved this interview! So important to consider the anxiety (and trauma!) that parents experience when their child doesn’t feed or grow “well”. The medical community can do real harm & often doesn’t even know they are. Clinicians like me often have to tell them!

@lucysky Just a sore injection site (mine is in Moderna clinical trial, so she got Moderna shots). Day 2 after second shot, her arm is a little red, but no other side effects.

THIS! And when your kid eats only the rolls at Thanksgiving dinner, LET IT GOOOOO! Holiday meals are meant to be times of joy & togetherness, & worrying about what kids are eating-or not eating- diminishes those things and can cause stress, for everyone. Happy Thanksgiving!

I have resorted to burning Pokémon cards as a punishment when my kid doesn’t do basic stuff he has to do.

@v_solesmith This topic had to be discussed when my then 6 yo was showering with me and she thought I was legit dying. Honestly, the explanation was less traumatic than “mommy is bleeding to death”! 😳

How does our reaction to a behavior inform what happens next? If a child can’t do something (yet!), we need to facilitate comfort and give them space to grow.

@amanda_hirsch @v_solesmith My second child began packing his own lunch at age 9, and my 8 year old often decides what snack she wants to have (from choices I give her. When you’ve been consistent with DOR and family meals, they seem to understand how to put together a meal once they get there.

@amanda_hirsch @v_solesmith I agree with Virginia, & have seen that shift gradually & naturally happen as my oldest became a teenager. Their hours become pretty strange & the only meal I insist on him eating with us is dinner—which he eats no matter how many snacks he’s had because he is a bottomless pit!

@v_solesmith Something I don't understand about DOR is, at what point, and in what way, do you equip the child to be the one to decide when and what to eat? Is there an article on this you recommend?
