New Zealand First Introduces Bill to Protect Against ‘Digital ID’ Overreach. New Zealand First has today introduced a Member’s Bill that would ensure physical identification remains a valid and equal alternative to fully digital identification. The Identification (Protection of Physical Identification Methods) Bill mandates that organisations accept passports, driver licences, 18+ cards, school IDs, and other prescribed physical documents whenever proof of age or identity is required. This is not about rejecting technology or digital progress. It’s about ensuring Kiwis retain the freedom to verify their identity without sacrificing their privacy. We’ve heard growing unease that digital-only systems could become coercive or insecure. Under the Bill, small organisations face fines up to $10,000 and larger ones up to $50,000 for refusing a valid physical ID without reasonable excuse. A clear complaint register, and annual reporting will ensure accountability. Our laws should protect personal choice and privacy, not erode them in the name of digital convenience. This isn’t anti-digital. It’s about putting people in control of their personal information. We’re offering common-sense guardrails against digital overreach. This Bill stands up for every Kiwi who values their privacy. This Bill is a win for individual freedoms.
