St Cyrus Beach & Nature Reserve, Aberdeenshire, Scotland 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿 Tucked along the northeast coast, this stunning stretch of golden sands is a proper hidden gem - its overlooked by volcanic cliffs that rise above the shore and is also surrounded by an expansive nature reserve. The cliffs are remnants of lava flows from around 400 million years ago when this part of Scotland sat near the equator, later shaped by ice age seas and turned into the rugged backdrop you see today. The National Nature Reserve here is one of the richest botanical spots on the north-east coast, with over 300 plant species that turn the meadows into a field of colour through spring and summer. It’s a haven for insects, butterflies and breeding birds like skylarks, stonechats and meadow pipits - while the beach often brings seabirds and the occasional glimpse of dolphins or seals further out. There’s a peaceful, slightly magical atmosphere to the place, especially when the light hits the cliffs and the tide rolls in. You can wander the soft sands, explore the paths through the flowery grasslands, or simply sit and take it all in - it’s also far less crowded than many other popular spots, which makes it even more special.

@Miners_Strike Over three days, more miners were arrested in Lochgelly than Orgreave, some lost their jobs as a result. Confidence in local policing would never be the same.

#OnThisDay 1984. Fifty pickets were arrested at Lochgelly, Fife. Miners and their wives had tried to stop coal from a privately owned mine being transported to the Ravenscraig steelworks.

A lot of well meaning people spent a lot of time and suffered a great deal of personal abuse making this simple point. If Parliament had listened instead of trying to push through unworkable legislation it all could have been avoided.

John Wheatley was a Glasgow Labour MP who became known as the father of social housing. It was great to catch up with @GlasgowHousing today and hear more about the work they’re doing to support people in the city.
