🚨 Spurs 26/27 With no European football, Spurs need a smaller squad next season. However, considering how many injuries the club have had in recent seasons, they also must prioritise strength in depth. The best way to do that is to sign starters and demote current starters to substitutes. Before looking at the squad, it's clear that Spurs need to get rid of deadwood and those who are unavailable all the time. -- Bissouma has lots of desirable physical and technical qualities but his attitude has been questioned by more manager than one. Get rid. -- Palhinha's attitude cannot be faulted and he is a good player but is 30. De Zerbi also needs a more technical #6. However, #6's are few and far between. At a cut-price deal, he may be worth considering, but only if there are no other better alternatives on the market. -- Romero is always injured. -- Drăgușin is nowhere near good enough. -- Kolo Muani flattered to deceive. Need better. -- Ben Davies a top pro but not at the level. -- Sarr a useful profile in the right context but with the presence of Gallagher, Gray, and Bergvall he becomes redunant. -- Richarlison is hardly available. Then it's time to look at the remaining pieces. Senesi and Robertson are good additions because they are good players, good pro's, and suit De Zerbi's style of play. Romero out means a right-sided starting quality centre back must come in. Van Hecke definitely fits the bill technically, and he is undeniably a good player even if he is not a 'pure defender' and can struggle athletically in open spaces (van de Ven can help with that as the cover defender). No Palhinha means a starting quality #6 must come in. The club also need a right winger because Kulusevski has been injured for more than a season now and Simons + Odobert did their ACL. With Simons, Tel, Maddison, and Odobert all preferring the left, Savinho links make sense because he is best on the right but can also play on the left. He also profiles as a top player at a good age with clear potential to skyrocket. Spurs need natural width on the right wing because of their left wing profiles being Simons, Tel, Maddison, and Odobert, all of which can hold the width but prefer to play inside the pitch. Savinho also fits that bill. Kudus will likely be converted into a central player under De Zerbi. He can play wide but he is not a natural width holder. He can do great damage between the lines. Think Rogers under Emery as part of the 4-2-4 / 4-2-2-2 build-up. Kudus is equally capable of carrying in open spaces. Under De Zerbi, the team build in a 4-2-4, attack in a 2-3-5 (with the right back inverted, the left back pushed on, the left winger inside, and the #8 dropping out to false fullback), and defend in a 4-4-2. That context suits many of Spurs' players with regards to their specific roles whilst also providing good tactical balance in the wide triangles and good depth across the squad. The #6 is one of two positions where I have not seen concrete links for Spurs yet. Nowadays, there are not many pure #6's. We are used to seeing complete #8's being turned into #6's because of that (Anderson, Tonali, Gravenberch, etc). Spurs will need to target one of those two profiles, but they must be stationary, positionally disciplined, and technical to manage the build-up. Mobility is not necessarily as important. It's more about zone dominance. Think Casemiro, Fabinho, Tchouaméni. The other void that Spurs need to fill is the #9. Solanke is very good, but he is rarely fit, so Spurs should look to replace him with a starting quality #9. I also think Kinsky should be pushed in pre-season. He profiles as a better fit for De Zerbi than Vicario. -- Overall, Spurs have a lot of work to do in the market. More outgoings than incomings, that's for sure, but if they get this summer right (and the signs are positive with the concrete signings/links so far in Robertson, ven Hecke, Senesi, Savinho), they can change the culture at the club and build a squad full of 'together', balanced, and talented players at a good age with an excellent coach at the helm. If Spurs get their business right this summer, there is no reason that they can't challenge for the Champions League spaces next season with De Zerbi in charge. Their squad will be in a much better place culturally with some key psychological profiles added and removed. 🛑
