This is terribly disappointing. PM Carney’s statement, and presumably his discussion with Salam, evades the central issue for Lebanon: whether it will continue to be held hostage by the Iranian terror proxy Hezbollah. The Lebanese government is finally taking some steps to crack down on the insanity of Hezbollah operating its own military in Lebanon, using the country as a staging ground for constant attacks on Israel. If the government and people of Lebanon are “not willing to be drawn into the current conflict,” then they must act to stop Hezbollah from attacking Israel. Lebanon is committed to doing so under multiple UN resolutions and ceasefire agreements. With Hezbollah now effectively cutoff from Iranian and Syrian support, and with much of its leadership eliminated, now is the time for Lebanon’s true friends to help rid the country of the cancer, which is a proscribed terrorist entity under Canadian law. Canada could do so immediately by launching a focussed crackdown on Hezbollah operatives here. For years, they have run a money laundering operation, particularly through shipping used and stolen cars out of the port of Montreal for resale in Africa and the Middle East. The people of Lebanon will never enjoy the stability or peace that they deserve until Hezbollah is neutralized. If Canada wants to be a friend of Lebanon, that must be the focus of our policy, not more empty bromides that ignore the problem.
