A broadcast comment targeting Jordan Lucas— a gay college volleyball player— has sparked backlash after former volleyball player Charlie Brande, who was commentating the match, said he was “amazed” the athlete hadn’t been punched over his on-court celebrations. The remark, made during an 11 April match between Cal State Northridge and UC Irvine, singled out Lucas’ expressive style of play, which was described on-air by Brande as “distasteful” and suggested it could provoke violence. Brande issued a public apology on the UC Irvine Men’s Volleyball Instagram page the following day (12 April), saying he “whole-heartedly” regretted the comment and acknowledged that “violence should never be acceptable or tolerated.” He added that he takes full accountability and intends to learn from the incident. Lucas, who is gay, declined to comment on the situation but confirmed his identity when approached by Outsports.

He faces up to 8 years in federal prison, according to the US Attorney's Office for the District of Oregon. The incident occurred on Sept. 4.
