Shot the night before, President Abraham Lincoln died #OTD at 7:22 am. Surgeon General Joseph Barnes arranged the deceased president’s hands across his chest and Pastor Phineas Gurley said a prayer. Secretary of War Edwin Stanton solemnly remarked: “Now he belongs to the ages.”

With his son Tad holding a lantern nearby, President Lincoln spoke to a large crowd outside the White House #OTD in 1865, outlining his plans for reconstruction. Listening in, an angry John Wilkes Booth vowed: "That is the last speech he will make."

Wow that really is so unfair to Miami, having to play a postseason game within two hours of someone else’s home stadium. I couldn’t possibly imagine a more unfair postseason scenario in college sports, can you? @gnybarra

The average E-3 is making just under $3200/month in base pay. Hostile fire pay is another $225/month. Additional pay and allowances in a war zone might kick them up to $45-50k a year if they’re drawing family sep, etc. Which translates to between 70-75% of the individual US average personal income of $66,662/year, 56-62% of the average US household income of $80,620/year.
In exchange they are on call 24/7 for the duration of their deployment and (depending on military occupation) routinely working 60-80+ hours a week in highly dangerous conditions that put life, limb, and mental health in jeopardy.
Given what we expect of these men and women, I hardly think a special meal every week or so - many years ago it was every Friday when I was deployed- is an extravagance.
