The recent *political* benefits of tax cuts and tax cut-like things haven’t been overwhelming. Didn’t seem huge during Trump 1. Not seeing it in Trump 2. Biden didn’t get huge political benefit from rebates/CTC. He saved Teamsters pension but didn’t even get endorsement.

Great @EricLevitz piece today on the recent middle class tax cut proposals we’ve seen over the last week. vox.com/politics/48255…

The two new Section 301 investigations are very broad: -Excess Capacity 301: 16 partners, 70.2% of imports -Forced Labor 301: 60 partners, 99.3% of imports That breadth suggests the goal isn't to address the issues at hand, but instead to recreate a sweeping tariff tool.

So, the incompetent administration started a war without any serious planning and now is "fixing" the problems it created by lifting sanctions on Russia and sacrificing Ukrainians. Absolute clowns

My op-ed in the @FT on the US net international investment position (NIIP) which is the trigger for Section 122 to deal with trade deficits. ft.com/content/bcf272…

I could never pull off a metaphor this well. (Although the nice firefighter doesn't seem to be in any hurry to show up.)

The economic case for Congressional action is only getting stronger. The serious price pressures in energy markets are adding to the stagflationary headwinds of the tariffs. A challenging time for the central bank.

(1/2) Your daily reminder that Congress has the power of the purse. They control these delegations of authority, and they have the ability to curb/end them. SCOTUS has done their job standing up for separation of powers. It's time for Congress to do theirs.

"Today, 24 states led by the state of Oregon filed the first lawsuit challenging Donald Trump's massive new Section 122 tariffs, which would impose 15% tariffs on most imports from nations around the world. The case is before the US Court of International Trade, which has exclusive jurisdiction over cases challenging tariffs." reason.com/volokh/2026/03…

Agree. This is more nuanced than it looks. And also important to remember that capital gains have a lot of tax preferences (deferral, step up), so those need to be reckoned with too.
Jason Furman@jasonfurman

I would add: 3. Not good tax policy if you don't adjust other parts of the system for inflation, most importantly reducing people's interest deduction to only real interest--no longer allowing deductions for the inflation component of interest.

Out today w/ Shane Ball, our piece in NYT. I used to think the Trump tariffs were about not understanding economics. Then I thought they were about disguising a shift in tax burdens. Those may both be true; yet the dominant aim may well be power/corruption. Link to follow.

Also, it's nice to see the Treasury Secretary openly admit the new Section 301 investigations will be reverse-engineered to justify new tariffs. Not even a hint that the investigation might go negative. It's all just a pretext. t.e2ma.net/message/ky5kvj… t.e2ma.net/message/ky5kvj…
