More underwater images of the mass bleaching unfolding in the northern GBR. Water temperatures appear to be dropping after prolonged heating of >5 DHW, but the coral bleaching at this reef is severe (>80% colonies), with exceptionally high rates of mortality in juvenile corals.

A question: Are "Community Science" and "Citizen Science" interchangeable? What country are you from? I'm hungry for a global perspective. I've heard arguments that 'Community Science" is more inclusive, but only among US colleagues. #ornithology @eBird @iNaturalist

I wonder how the collapse of the Atlantic overturning will impact these areas?

The new & expanded IMMA e-Atlas arrives today with 33 new Important Marine Mammal Areas (IMMAs) from the NE Atlantic Ocean & Baltic Sea. The IMMA tool aims to give #whales, #dolphins, #seals & other marine mammals a seat at the table to argue for protection of their ocean homes. Have a look: marinemammalhabitat.org/imma-eatlas/ News story here: marinemammalhabitat.org/immas-focus-th… Photos: Common dolphin, Orca.org; long-finned pilot whale, Patrick Lyne (IWDG); Risso's dolphins, Karin L. New study: the Atlantic overturning circulation AMOC “is on tipping course”. The paper by Dutch colleagues adds more weight to recent warnings, such as the OECD Climate Tipping Points report of 2022 and the Global Tipping Points report published 2023. realclimate.org/index.php/arch…

I gather some misunderstand this paper as an unrealistic model scenario for the future. That’s wrong. This type of experiment is not a future projection at all, but rather done to trace the equilibrium stability curve, from which an early warning indicator was then developed. The conclusion that the AMOC is „on course to tipping“ is based on applying that indicator to *reanalysis data* (observations-based products), as shown in Fig. 6 of the paper. In other words it’s observational data from the South Atlantic which suggest the AMOC is on tipping course.
