Guys, come on… can we stop calling Demon Slayer (Kimetsu no Yaiba) characters “schizophrenic” lol Not only is that kinda messed up as a term, but it mostly comes from a really surface-level read of the series. In the manga, Breathing styles aren’t real elements, they don’t get things wet, don’t burn stuff, don’t electrocute anyone, and no one’s flying around cracking the ground. Whenever it’s described, it’s always like “it looks like…”, “it’s as if…”. If it were literal, they wouldn’t need to phrase it like that. And the manga is actually pretty consistent about it, through dialogue, narration, even official material. The anime goes way over the top sometimes and can’t decide what it wants to be, which just confuses people more. Also, no one’s actually yelling attack names mid-fight lol that’s an anime thing. In the manga, it’s mostly there for the reader. Anyway, just wanted to say this because people keep acting like Gotouge retconned everything at the end and then go straight to trashing her. It’s really not that deep 🤝

That’s what I see the most. People think Sun Breathing is the only one that “burns”because it’s the “primordial” style, and also because of that scene where Daki clearly says it “feels like”it’s burning. I still don’t get why that gets taken literally. They also assume Flame Breathing actually burns, and that Sun Breathing is straight-up magic because it affected Muzan, when in that case there were other factors involved, one of them being the red blade.

The Breathing Styles system is actually pretty simple, and even so, there are plenty of moments in both the manga and the anime where its structure is shown: the fundamentals, the foundation through Total Concentration, the derivatives, the biomechanics behind certain moves, and even full explanations from both the narrator and the characters.

Yeah, it didn’t bother me much before, but nowadays it kinda does, especially how Tanjiro sometimes ends up explaining everything he’s doing mid-scene, so I get your point. I do think there are stories where narration is really important. I’m not sure how it would’ve been best handled in this case, but it’s pretty clear that some level of narration was needed. Otherwise, people end up thinking certain techniques or moments are just plot holes. To be fair, a lot of people still think that today, mostly because the anime cuts out the narration that the manga actually has.

@Ifty2006 @NathanielJean7 @0_unknown01 It really depends on how it’s handled, but there are other moments where narration would be necessary. Even today, a lot of people think Sun Breathing burns demons because the Tanjiro vs. Daki scene lacks that narration.

@kuda_graw @animeposts I get what you mean, but Breathing Forms are different from Breathing Techniques 😅 The forms are basically muscle memory, which is why they’re referred to as “kata”.

There’s a common misunderstanding around this, it makes it seem like they used to be actual powers, and then out of nowhere Gotouge decided after the series ended that they weren’t magical. But that’s not really true. The story is built from the start on the idea that they’re not magic. Just because a series has some supernatural elements doesn’t mean everything in it has to be magic. Otherwise, we wouldn’t have works like Batman, Rurouni Kenshin, Vinland Saga, or Attack on Titan, where grounded elements exist alongside more fantastical ones.

And other characters swing hard enough to send air slashes at their opponents!
