Grade 3 students @lfcds1888 began the school year by sorting coins in chronological order. Students used different strategies and teamwork. They also noticed how some older coins were thicker and that some worn quarters have copper in them!

Summer camp students @lfcds1888 are trying to find micrometeorites. They used strong magnets to collect samples from outside and then looked at them under the microscope. Some looked very similar to our big meteorite samples in our science lab.

Grade 1 students @lfcds1888 experiencing paleontology! Students excavated in dirt bins to find real fossils, and learn what animals lived millions of years ago. To make it feel like a real dig, we went outside in the the hot sun!

@SusieMUC @lfcds1888 The kids asked if they could build something this year. It is their eagerness to do things that keeps me motivated.

Grade 1 Students @lfcds1888 are inquiring about systems. A system is made of parts that work together and are connected a specific way. Students were given clips, batteries, switches, and light bulbs to create a working system. It required careful thinking and testing.

Space is vast, and Grade 2 students @lfcds1888 wanted to understand how much. After creating a map of the solar system on paper, students created a map of the solar system in our hallway using yard sticks. Pluto and Voyager 2 were placed on the other end of our school's hallway!

Grade 1 students @lfcds1888 are studying light. Today, students explored refraction by using cups of water, colors, sand, and flashlights. They noticed objects looked bigger and bent in water. Then they explored what would happen to light if they mixed sand and colors in the cup.

@SusieMUC @lfcds1888 We used small chisels and practiced finding the weak spots ( cracks). A small hammer could also help.

The best way to learn about rocks and minerals are to handle and observe them under the microscopes. Grade 4 students @lfcds1888 scraped specimens and observed them under microscopes. They were amazed at the geometry, colors, and how a plain rock has so much information!

Underwater volcanoes are exciting to study, especially when you can simulate them. Grade 2 students @lfcds1888 observed how an island formed when magma and lava (wax) broke through the crust under the ocean(water in beaker).
