The route to market was a thing of beauty, when Coca-Cola handled direct distribution in Nigeria, before switching to the distributor model. It was an incredibly detailed and disciplined system. Even after the transition, they continued to leverage that knowledge to guide their distributors, and they still do today. The market mapping went down to the smallest retailer, even those selling just five bottles a day. Every outlet was known, and someone was responsible for tracking and servicing it. FMCG is all about distribution. The mantra then was, "A cold Coke is a sold Coke." Our job was simply to ensure retailers never ran out of Coke and always had a way to keep it cold. So we distributed cooling units, coolers, and even supplied daily ice to street vendors. It was hard work, but it worked. I hated the job sha... I was out on the streets every single day 9am to 4pm, it was crime to see a sales staff in the office anything after 8.30am.
