So far, I've been to Spain, France, and Andorra.
Water isn't free, you need to pay for it.
And even soda isn't cheap.
A soda costs €4.50 in France (!), for 2 that's already €9.
And this isn't free flow/unlimited refills like in the US.
They give you a tiny glass bottle + a glass with 2 pieces of ice if you're lucky.
So believe me, one way or another, they'll get you. 🤷

It's an interesting fact of human history that we have these two similar sized islands, Japan and the UK that are close to a mainland, and have had outsized influence and power throughout history compared to their size.
Having an island of a certain size or above separated from the mainland really seems like a powerful starting position.
Both held their own historically against the significantly larger continental rival (France, China).
Madagascar and the southern African mainland present a similar geographical arrangement, but it hasn't had the same historical importance.

@jonatanpallesen You touched on the statistical one: n=2, counterexamples... But you missed that those islands were colonized repeatedly. The "history" you selected is biased. The genetic profile is not allopatric at all! Romans, Anglo-Saxons, Vikings, Normans... weren't exactly from the island.
