@Blue_Collar2 @Olegmih @Mick_O_Keeffe The government are getting more in tax the higher the price of oil goes. They are literally profiting from the pain the general public are feeling from the fuel prices.

🚨🇮🇪 More disturbing footage of garda aggression towards protestors in Cork is beginning to emerge. These people aren't fit to wear the garda uniform, they are nothing but thugs.

@EO_Halloran Sometimes it takes a short sharp shock for the necessary action to be taken for long term benefit for all. Government policies are making the people living in Ireland worse off. Cost of accommodation, energy and food are all at unaffordable levels even for those on decent wages

Not sure how people who understand and support the protests can accept these protests not allowing fuel into the country This will cause a week long price aftershock at least and by that time the global oil shortage will have gotten worse This does not help ordinary people

Gardaí are now trying to bring a third fuel tanker into Whitegate refinery. However, protesters say no further tankers will be permitted entry. @rtenews

The Irish Times and RTE published - line for line - four entirely identical paragraphs - in a row - about a fuel protestor. Are our media independent of each other or just part of a singular propaganda arm of Fianna Fáil & Fine Gael?

Its extremely hard not to sound condescending explaining to people that the government doesn't actually want all businesses to collapse and go under from fuel prices Even by their own logic, why would a government want to crash their own economy and make itself poorer?

@ProfPatOConnor @MichealMartinTD Very poor take in fairness. They are not rocking up to the casinos of Monaco in these “large expensive modes of transport” these are specialist work equipment designed to do very specific jobs and yes they cost a lot of money which they have paid VRT and VAT on.

Does anyone believe that the holding of the country to ransom by those who have large expensive modes of transport is REALLY about the price of petrol/diesel?? The triumph of might over everyone else’s lives/health … @MichealMartinTD

@FineGael €4m a day or €28m a week in supports. That is amazing. There has been an increase of €40m a week in the tax take on fuel since the crisis started. That’s €12m extra, per week.

@scesilva @JohnOBrennan2 They could set a value they get per litre no matter the price of oil. If the oil price drops they get a little extra if the price goes up they still get their cut but the public and businesses don’t get screwed.

@JohnOBrennan2 How? The budget assumes a certain tax revenue from fuels that is related to a fixed assume oil barrel price. Adjusting the tax to bring to a near-0 net gain to the government doesn’t affect the budget assumes long as the income keeps within the budget projections.

This won't be popular but Irish taxes on fuel aren't out of line with many EU countries. You can disagree with the amount, sure, I do, but we aren't some crazy outlier.

Visited the protest on O'Connell St trying to help find a solution. It is unbelievable that the gov has escalated this protest to where fuel is running out on forecourts across the county. Mícheal Martin, pick up the phone, organise a meeting & let these people go home.
