I'm not the biggest McCarthy fan, either, but I still don't quite get why one hire was universally praised and the other (so far) is being largely panned.
I realize the Steelers & Giants are in different places, but you can't tell me people would have loved them hiring McCarthy

Almost every single College Football Playoff voter has Notre Dame comfortably ahead of Miami.

I’m told interim head coach Mike Kafka informed the coaches that outside linebackers coach Charlie Bullen will be the interim defensive coordinator, per league source.

This is 100% the wrong take.
The Lions were cruising down the field at will. Taking the chance to end the game on your on terms was worth the risk.
If you kicked, Detroit would have had over 2 minutes to go score a TD and they probably would have.

In my opinion, interim coach Mike Kafka eliminated himself from contention to be Giants coach next year when he decided to go for it on fourth and goal from Lions 6 up 27-24 with about 3 minutes left. Winston threw incomplete, Lions tied it on 59 FG and won in OT. How can you not kick FG to go up 6 and force Lions to get TD? Game management is top priority and despite Kafka's creative play calling today, he made an indefensible decision that could have cost the game. Giants have blown 5 double digit leads in their 10 losses, three of them in the fourth quarter, all on the road.
