This is demand flexibility (great reporting by Hilary Beaumont The Guardian on this, linked below) - and the reason it works is because it rewards people that adjust their habits when demand peaks. Systems that make the positive results of our decision-making more visible, especially when it comes to sustainability, are simply more effective. Lowering our energy bills, or the accumulating rewards, all from choosing to use less electricity, makes it that much easier to keep making good choices. A project I like in the VeChain ecosystem that does this is HangnDry, which is an app that rewards you for using less electricity by choosing to air-dry vs. tumble dry your clothes. This can have a huge impact on household energy use - up to 90%! - and is just one example of how easy it is to reward people for using less electricity.
