ASHLEY JACKSON • 2025-2-10 "I Am Somebody." My father, Rev. Jesse Jackson, Sr., first spoke these words to uplift and empower. Hearing his poem recited decades after he penned it—on one of the world's biggest stages during the 59th Super Bowl—is a testament to its enduring power and reach. It brought a smile to my face to see such beautiful children embracing its message. As these words continue to echo in new spaces, we have a responsibility to ensure that future generations know both where they come from and what they stand for. They were born from a movement-rooted in dignity, justice, and the fight for belonging in a society that othered marginalized communities.

@BruceHistorian @dieworkwear Good book. I recall Sessions might have a chapter in there telling the story of taking over the plant. Anne Lewis' Justice in the Coalfields is an amazing film. I also recall that Barbra Kopple (Harlan County USA, et) made a film abt strike for the UMWA.

@NationInside @dieworkwear Yes, it is by Earl Dotter, according to the attribution when Steve Fisher used it on the cover of his book Fighting Back in Appalachia. It was Sep. 1989 at the Moss Preparation Plant.

Love this photo of the 1989 Pittston Coal strike. The strike lasted for almost a year, as the miners fought for the healthcare and retirement benefits originally promised to them. To show solidarity, they all wore camo in this photo. The one man who didn't — in the lower right corner — was a Methodist minister who helped them articulate the moral and spiritual case for the strike. He deliberately didn't wear camo because he wasn't a miner. The camo shirts were specially made with slogans: “Overcome Evil With Good” and the name of their union, United Mine Workers Union. Not only did the miners win, but they helped inspire the 1992 Coal Act, which made retiree health and pension obligations a legal requirement. Thanks to ES for sharing this photo with me. His dad is the minister in the corner.

The Supreme Court is hiding something from you. And it could change the fabric of our country. It is a truth universally acknowledged that if you want to hide what you are doing in Washington, announce it on a Friday evening in the heat of August. That is precisely what the Supreme Court did. But the news is too staggering to hide for long: The Republican-appointed justices have decided it is time to fully destroy the 1965 Voting Rights Act. Pema Levy shines a light on what you need to know.

Prison phone calls used to cost $12 for 15 minutes. Now, FCC rules cut that to 90 cents in big jails. Huge win for families. Details here: wired.com/story/fcc-pris…
