Statement from Tucker Neale, President, OhioBasketball Regarding July 13 safety incident at the Kentucky Exposition Center during the Run 4ย Theย Rosesย Championship.
On Sunday, an unfortunate malfunction at the Kentucky Exposition Center in Louisville during theย Run 4 The Roses Championshipsย caused a loud disturbance. This led to several individuals shouting โshots firedโ while fleeing the venue, which led to panic among guests and participants.ย This resulted in a mass evacuation, dozens of emergency calls to the Louisville Metro Police Department (LMPD), and a full-scale response to the venue.
We are relieved to report that once the building was safely evacuated, an investigation foundย that there was no active shooter, no credible threat, andโmost importantlyโno one was harmed.ย A smoke alarm triggered by a duct vent sensor malfunction caused the disturbance, and at no time were any of the participants or guests in any danger.
We are deeply grateful for the fast and professional response by on-site security, LMPD, and state security personnel, all of whom acted swiftly to secure the facility and protect everyone in attendance.
We recognize the fear and disruption experienced by our participants, spectators, and community members as a result of the facilityโs malfunction and the resulting panic.
I want to personally reassure all guests:ย OhioBasketball events are safe and secure, and we areย usingย this incident as an opportunity to take additional stepsโeffective immediatelyโto further strengthen that commitment:

We are also working closely with Kentucky Venues and local authorities to review our safety protocols and make additional improvements where needed.
