My teenager just pointed out the plot twist of the century: “Don’t share your personal info online, it’s dangerous”… unless you want to use social media, in which case please upload your ID, proof of existence, and possibly a scan of your soul. We’ve gone from “don’t talk to strangers on the internet” to “please hand a stranger on the internet your passport so you can prove you’re allowed to scroll memes.” Somewhere, a cybersecurity teacher is just slowly closing their laptop.

My 17-year-old daughter: “I’m confused. We’ve always been taught not to share personal information or anything that identifies us online because it isn’t safe. Now they want us to do exactly that to access social media.”

Every by-election in Britain now gets treated like it’s going to decide the fate of civilisation, the economy, and possibly the weather. If the result goes one way, it’s “a seismic shift in public mood”; if it goes the other, it’s “a warning shot to Westminster”—and then everyone carries on exactly as before on Monday morning. Somewhere between the leaflets, the doorstep chats, and the counting hall tea urn, democracy is basically just a very serious hobby we all argue about online.

So the Government reckons the future of online safety is: under-16s get the digital velvet rope… and adults get to prove they’re adults just to argue about it online. Nothing says “free society” quite like logging in to post your lunch and being asked for ID like you’re buying fireworks and bad decisions at the same time. Somewhere out there, a 14-year-old is watching all this thinking: “honestly… I could’ve built a fake ID system faster than this.”

It's not about banning children from using social media platforms. It's about an ID check for adults.

Remember when politicians promised our kids would be safer, our streets would be safer, and common sense would make a comeback? These days, every breaking news alert feels like the trailer for a dystopian Netflix series nobody asked for. Whatever the truth of the latest reports, one thing is certain: parents shouldn't have to worry about whether their children can get home safely. Protecting our kids shouldn't be controversial—it should be the easiest job in government.

Social media ban, ever notice how Graham Hall when taking on a problem dog spends as much time in training the adult humans? What if the government spent as much time educating adults how to lockdown their kids phones with many free tools available they'd be no need for a ban? It seems that this is actually more about digital ID by the back door!?

“Adults can still access social media through age checks like facial recognition, digital IDs, passports and credit cards” This is what Labour and the Conservatives now call freedom: proving who you are before you can speak, read or participate online. They say this ban protects children from online predators. I’ve prosecuted those predators. Here’s what they don’t tell you. We catch him. We charge him. Then he’s released on bail while the case crawls through the courts for a year. When he’s convicted, he doesn’t go to prison, he gets a suspended sentence or a community order. Successive governments won’t lock up the actual predator, won’t take away the groomer’s freedom. But won’t hesitate to curb ours.
Politics UK@PolitlcsUK

🚨 SUMMARY: The UK's social media ban for children from early 2027: - "User-to-user" apps where people create, share and interact with content (e.g. TikTok, Instagram, Snapchat, YouTube, X, Facebook) will be banned for under-16s - WhatsApp, Signal and YouTube Kids will be exempt - Under-16s will also be banned from livestreaming, messaging strangers on gaming apps like Discord and using disappearing messages - 16 and 17 year olds will face nightly social media curfews and limits on infinite scrolling with more details next month - AI "romantic companion" chatbots will be banned for under-18s - Adults can still access social media through age checks like facial recognition, digital IDs, passports and credit cards

The government says age checks and ID verification for social media are about protecting children. Critics say it's a bit like being told the CCTV camera in your living room is there for your own convenience. Funny how every new restriction arrives wrapped in a safety label. The debate isn't whether children should be protected—it's how much privacy and freedom adults are expected to hand over along the way.

So Keir Starmer has announced that everyone must tell the government who they are before accessing social media. Of course this was the plan all along, it was nothing to do with protecting kids. This was all about restricting freedom of speech

🚨NEWS: Keir Starmer has announced that due to the under 16’s social media ban he is about to make law. Every adult in the UK will have to prove who they are to use social media. Anonymity online is now officially dead

Reform UK says "British workers will come first every time." 🇬🇧🧑‍🔧Brilliant. Sounds amazing. Quick question though: does "coming first" include showing up at 6 AM to pick strawberries in Lincolnshire, or are we just talking about being first in line at the bakery? Promising to put British workers first is great until you realize half the country won't even work a Monday if it's slightly overcast. Peak comedy. 🤫
