Along the railway line between Estcourt and Ladysmith, near Frere in KwaZulu-Natal, stands a small stone monument marking a remarkable piece of history. It is the site where an armored train was derailed on 15 November 1899 during the Anglo-Boer War after Boer forces placed rocks on the railway line. Among the people on the train was a young journalist, Winston Churchill, who was captured by Boer forces during the incident. He later escaped from captivity and, years afterward, became Prime Minister of Britain. What struck me is that the place today appears very quiet and almost deserted. The signs are faded, and the monument stands alone in the field. Yet, on this quiet piece of land, an event took place that became part of world history. Some places may look simple and forgotten, but they carry great stories.
