Admiral Ueda and his historians dived with us in HURL’s Pisces submersibles on the 3-section wreck in March 2009. The Admiral confirmed the identity of the sub wreck and had ocean sediment retrieved to present to the Yokoyama family back in Japan. Kirk would make the documentary for PBS NOVA, entitled, “Killer Subs in Pearl Harbor” (NHK would produce a companion documentary for Japanese audiences). There was no question that we had found the Yokoyama boat but question still remained: From where did the Navy find and raise this sub?
Why was the submarine cut up into 3 sections and dumped outside the harbor? Why has no record of this happening ever surfaced? Why are the sub’s torpedoes missing? For his part, Terry believes as I do that the sub was discovered and raised in the West Loch after a massive accident there in 1944. But he does not believe that the sub managed to reach Battleship Row. I, other the other hand, believe actually that, and have continued my research since the broadcast of the NOVA documentary. What I have found supports my ultimate conclusion…that the Yokoyama boat did set opposite Battleship Row during the attack and one of its torpedoes hit USS OKLAHOMA, causing her to capsize. I will be laying out my argument and all evidence in a book that I have started writing, to be published after I have ensured that my current responsibility, USS KIDD, is prepared to spend another 40-60 years educating the public about her history.
