Coastal cities are replacing concrete seawalls with oyster reefs. The oysters are better at the job. Seawalls begin to degrade the minute they're installed. Waves chew them up, storms crack them, and they have to be repaired, replaced, and rebuilt forever. An oyster reef doesn't break down, it actually grows. The oysters stack, reproduce, and fuse into living rock that gets stronger every year. A mature reef can cut incoming wave height by up to 83%. It traps sediment, rebuilds the shoreline behind it, and shelters fish, crabs, and shrimp in the process. A hectare of oyster reef provides up to $85,000 a year in shoreline protection. Concrete costs over a million dollars a hectare to build and only gets weaker. Oysters were the answer the whole time.

If only I could hunt the hunter

Spiders are beneficial and you should not kill them on sight. Most spiders in your yard or home are doing important work. They’re natural pest control, eating mosquitoes, flies, aphids, and other insects that actually bother us. A single spider can eat hundreds of pests in a season. They’re also food for birds, lizards, frogs, and even some small mammals. Killing them removes both a predator and prey from the local food web. The vast majority of spiders you’ll encounter are completely harmless to humans. Even the few that can bite (like black widows or brown recluses) are shy and only bite if trapped or threatened. Next time you see one indoors, try gently moving it outside with a cup and paper instead of reaching for the shoe or spray. Outdoors, just leave them be. They’re already working for you. A yard with spiders is usually a healthier yard. Have you ever let a spider stay in your house or garden instead of killing it?

“Dead” wood isn’t dead. It’s may be the most valuable things you can leave in your yard for wildlife. A standing dead tree (called a snag) or a simple pile of logs and branches creates instant housing and a buffet. Woodpeckers, chickadees, bluebirds, owls, and bats nest in cavities. Insects move in to break down the wood, becoming food for birds, lizards, toads, and small mammals. Loose bark, rotting spots, and hollows give shelter to salamanders, flying squirrels, and butterflies. Even a small log pile or one safe snag supports way more life than a perfectly “clean” yard. If it’s not a hazard, leave it. Nature will thank you with more birds, beneficial insects, and a healthier backyard ecosystem. Do you leave any dead wood or brush piles in your yard?
