One time, I went to Mushin market to buy foodstuff for the home. I wanted to buy fresh corn because I started toying with the idea of making beans and corn (Àdàlú) at home. When I got to the woman, she had them laid out in batches cobs. I didn't understand how I would buy them and start to "de-corn" them at home. So, I asked her in Yoruba, "You people don't sell the corn that you have already plucked?" She looked at me as if I had just fallen from an alternate universe; like she had never heard such a ridiculous request before in her life. I haven't attempted to buy corn to make Àdàlú again since then.
