Just re-watched CBS's disaster on 18 from Sunday. Some notes.
Immelman offered no usable opinions on driver vs. 3-wood off the tee. Nantz had to coax it out of him by asking if he liked it. Of course, the likable Trevor said sweetly: "Yes I do." I can only dream of what Ken Venturi would have done in that spot. He would have been absolutely in his bag.
There was no attempt at discerning how far back Rory was once they found his drive. This is because Dottie was not in position yet (not her fault) and it was so far right. They could have guessed, but Augusta has an explicit policy for announcers to never guess where a ball might be. This rule was written for the broadcasters back in the stone ages, and needs to be ditched asap.
Trevor correctly assessed the play as not bad, with a sweeping hook over the stand of trees backing the scoreboard, but there was no estimation of how tall those trees were, or what club was needed to clear them.
Once over the ball, Trevor's only thought was keep your right foot from slipping. Okay, fine. But I wanted to know where was a good miss, and what would be a disaster. No opinion was offered.
Then, I discovered THE BIGGEST CBS fuck up of the entire hole. THE AUDIO MIX! Finally after the strike, Dottie said "8-iron, on the way."
Or at least... I *think* she did. But you could barely make it out. I had to replay it at least 5x to be sure. The gain on the crowd was too high, and the announcer mix had to fight to get through.
Again, no yardage or even estimate of yardage was given.
From that point, an agonizing 1 minute and 7 seconds elapsed before CBS showed a ball in the front bunker. But because CBS ALSO missed what happened to Cam Young's ball, there was still uncertainty.
Nantz finally offered up a meek "There's one...." when the cameras zoomed in on Rory's ball in the bunker. THERE'S ONE?? Good lord. You also had a hard time hearing it because again, the audio mix was absolute shit.
Trevor then added (insanely considering this is the 72 hole of the most famous golf tournament in the world) the following: "If that's a ball......"
IF... that's a ball (in the bunker). IF?? What the fuck are we doing fellas?
Clearly, CBS made an ugly triple here due to a variety of factors. Yes there was chaos. Yes, Rory was in uncharted parts of that hole.
But the Masters not allowing more on-foot assets (reporters/spotters) by CBS, and this idiotic edict to never "guess" where a ball is, combined with shitty audio mix, made for a terrible finale.
And while Nantz is defending his network and colleagues publicly, I am sure he's pissed in private. Hopefully, CBS goes to the green jackets and asks for more leeway on certain things to avoid this happening again the future.
As for Rory's feet blocking sight of the 2 incher to win? Meh. A cherry on top of the turd sundae. The least of things to be frustrated by.

@SBurkowskiGC @PasatiempoGolf @GolfChannel My friends and I have the over/under at 112 for this tournament with the number of times you mention Pasatiempo + Alister Mackenzie + Emilia won a National Championship at Wake Forest. 🤣

Pasatiempo greens this week:

@TheAthletic @BFQuinn When does the Trevor Immelman experiment conclude? I'm not sure exactly what he brings to a broadcast?
English

When Trevor Immelman became CBS' lead golf analyst, he was a two-time PGA Tour winner, but not a household name.
Now, his place is earned, full of fleeting fulfillment and realized purpose.
But his world could’ve easily spun otherwise.

@JeffCarnage In 2022, Linn Grant won the Scandinavian Mixed on the DP World Tour. I was watching it when Player visited the booth for some commentary. While they were showing Linn on the screen, Player made the comment....what a beautiful body. I haven't cared for the guy since.

@GolfChannel @anwagolf I've watched the ANWA since day 1. It seems every year that Jennifer Kupcho's inaugural win was irksome for Golf Channel. In her come from behind win, Jennifer produced the greatest final 6 holes in Augusta history, yet she seems to be mentioned every year, like a side note.

@megadkins_TFE Such a level of impertinence from Annika. Maria José Marin was the best golfer out there. The scoreboard doesn't lie.

@grantboone @ford_champ_ I'm a long-time LPGA fan. What I've found most irksome these last 2 weeks during the broadcasts is the constant yearning for Nelly and what Nelly needed to do, contrasting that with how Hyo-Joo could falter. Celebrate the dominant and clutch golf Hyo-joo has been providing.
English

Better with Age: Hyo Joo Kim won her ninth LPGA title Sunday and her second in as many weeks with an historic performance at the @ford_champ_. She became the first to shoot a pair of 61s or better in the same event and the first to go -25 through 54 holes. To go back to back and on both occasions head to head with Nelly Korda make this run even more impressive.
As does the fact that she has stood the test of time, participating in women’s golf’s decade-long youth movement that saw Morgan Pressel, Lexi Thompson, Lydia Ko, and Brooke Henderson win majors as teenagers — she was 19 when she shot the lowest round (61) in a grand slam event, women’s or men’s — and now defying the current trend that has seen fewer winners over the age of 30 and almost none even competing past 40.
Evidence of her longevity is in those Hyo Joo has defeated. At Evian in 2014, one of the greatest ever in Karrie Webb. In her first US win in 2015, former No. 1 Stacy Lewis. At the Ford the last two years, Lilia Vu and Nelly — both multiple major champs who have been atop the Rolex Rankings.
With nine wins, she moves past current No. 1 Jeeno Thitikul and pulls even with Anna Nordqvist in rising to a career best third in the world. She also multiple wins in a season for the first time. A great start to the year, an outstanding career, and who knows: maybe her best is yet to come.

Ludvig Åberg will be paired in the final twosome with Michael Thorbjornsen on Sunday at #ThePlayers. Åberg said Saturday night, holding a two-shot lead: “When we were both in college it felt like we played every single tournament together.”
He was right.
As amateurs, Åberg and Thor played 19 common stroke-play events with Åberg winning that head-to-head series, 11-6-2.
Their first matchup came at the 2017 AJGA Rolex Tournament of Championship, where Thor tied for fifth and Åberg was T-16.
The first time they were both in contention was the 2018 AJGA Ping Invitational. They each shot 77 in the final round (the field average was 74.7 that day); Thor still won in a three-man playoff while Åberg slipped to T-6.
At the 2022 U.S. Amateur, they were paired for the first two rounds at Ridgewood. Thor tied for medalist honors and Åberg shared 39th to also make match play, though both lost in the Round of 64.
Their biggest battle came at the 2023 Prestige. Grouped together in the final round, Åberg shot 70 to Thor’s 74 to make up two shots on Thor and win by one over William Mouw.

@Politicalzilla @PGATOUR @the_cognizant Jeezus yes! I'm glad I'm not the only one. There is so much jibberish and unnecessary talk. He speaks incessantly about trivial and inconsequential stuff. As an avid watcher, I've had to lower the volume to a whisper because of his annoying mannerisms. He should be on-course.
English

I'm sorry, but Steve Sands is the worst golf commentator in the world.

@worldhockeyrpt Have you listened to the duo calling long track speed skating? 🫣 We have fallen so far from the days of Steve Armitage.
English

@CBCOlympics @anastasure Steve Armitage left some massive shoes to fill...massive, which may or may not ever be filled. I've been listening to the long track skating calls, and they sound very impetuous, hurried, and shrieky. The calls come across as undesciplined and amateurish. Slow it down.
