June 22 2025.  After U.S. airstrikes on Iranian nuclear sites, Iran's parliament approved a measure to close the Strait of Hormuz.  A senior iranian lawmaker said Iran should shut it down.  The final decision rested with Iran's national security council. Trump used the gift of this leverage right away. June 22 and 23 2025.  Secretary of State Marco Rubio publicly called on China to stop Iran from closing the Strait.  Rubio said China depends heavily on Hormuz oil.  A closure would hurt other countries far more than the U.S. Trump kept pressure on talks, and He warned of consequences if Iran followed through.  Iran did not fully close the Strait in June 2025. Then the 2026 threats and closure. February 16 2026.  A senior IRGC commander warned they were ready to close the Strait whenever ordered. March 2 2026.  An IRGC official declared the Strait closed and threatened to set any passing ships ablaze. March 4 2026.  Iranian forces officially declared the Strait closed and began attacking ships trying to transit. Trump's negotiations intensified once the Strait was closed. He called on countries that depend on Hormuz oil to send warships and help secure the Strait. He named Japan, South Korea, China, the UK, France, and others.
