WINNING: Clay Fuller door-knocking in GA-14. Elections are won with money and grassroots work, not with social media influencers alone. No offense to my friends who work hard to drive emotional reactions and trends—everyone has a purpose and a function. Influencers are important in national elections and in the three-day news cycle. But to win local elections, you need money: TV ad buys, social media ad buys, mailers, texts, emails, signs, palm cards, campaign managers, and a team. You have to do the work. GOP events are often preaching to the choir. Even so, it is mandatory to make the rounds because, in theory, the members you persuade will help get out the vote, either through word of mouth or actual volunteer work. Make the videos, yes. You need to circulate the sometimes robotic campaign messages that hopefully reach people outside the choir of GOP members. The messaging has to reflect kitchen-table political concerns, not just a single issue. But the bottom line—and where many fail—is reaching the average voter in person. You have to knock on doors. That is basic grassroots politics. Democrats will have a well-oiled machine in these forthcoming midterms, and if Georgia wants to take back that Senate seat and keep our governor’s office red, y’all need to do it all, not just one part of it.
