In the last two years since joining a committee at a football club I have learnt the biggest lessons ever. As a coach... you go to training sessions, you go to matches, you go the odd managers meeting and if your not using council pitches you mark out a pitch. That alone is hard work let alone taking on the most unsavoury part which is that you take flack from parents who don’t realise you are still paying for your child too. HOWEVER as a committee member and a manager this year I decided to take three weeks from training, I even dare to take a holiday. In that three weeks I was still dealing with: * new teams * Teams leaving * Player enquiries * Registrations * Sorting out players and parents that decide to leave despite having put out numerous amount of messages months before. * Kit orders which some how have to be collected during my busiest period of work * Equipment orders * Organising the collection of data for dbs so that new teams can actually run * League meetings * Parent enquiries and complaints which may have started from earlier during the season * Chasing up of subs so that bills can be paid for the season ahead. * Keeping on top of other managers. * Cut time short at work to interview new coaches You can’t really blame my wife for the sheer fact that whilst I’m meant to be taking a break my mind actually hasn’t switched off taking time away from my family. Now let’s not forget the fact that like other parents I too will pay my subs, I too am self employed , i too have family members ,I too have children and a family. Now over the course of the season il be doing my best like other committee members to ensure that the upkeep of the club is run. When there’s heavy rain forecasted il be getting down the club super early to make a call on pitches whilst others are slowly getting out of their bed and waking up and waiting for my call or text. However whilst I will do all the above I will also get it wrong at times. I will make the wrong decision at times , the wrong sub, perhaps make a wrong decision whilst trying to ref and run the team at the same time. Sadly I’ve listened to parents and grandparents from my own club slate other managers and committee members on the sidelines forgetting that these VOLUNTEERS stepped up quite simply when no one else did. Different clubs do things differently as I have found out first hand. I am doing the job that at some clubs has four people doing, but at other clubs doesn’t even have one. WE ARE VOLUNTEERS. So on behalf of every grassroots coach in the country can I please ask every grassroots parent to ensure that when they are perhaps having their conversations about the coach or managers on the sidelines, that they remember they have taken A LOT of time away from their own families and children to take time out for yours. This is all about the children in the team , however if you feel you could do some of the roles your club takes on then join the team, however if you can’t due to the problems and time constraints, which your child’s manager also has then please let them do the job they enjoy as best as they can. Many thanks, Every hardworking grassroots volunteer

It costs £0.00 to ask a grassroots volunteer if they need a hand, to put up a net, to collect in the cones at the end of a session, to collect the subs, taking one small job away helps so much, they’ll most likely say no but the offer will mean the world to them. Just saying..

Due to concerning levels of behaviour in North Riding at grassroots games the CEO of North Riding County FA has wrote this message to the entire county Dear all, I write to you extremely concerned about the poor behaviour and indiscipline that is currently blighting the game in North Riding. So far during the month of October we have received a large number of reports of poor discipline, a number of which have resulted in the abandonment of matches. Unfortunately, this behaviour is affecting all areas of the game – youth & adult; male & female. It is especially disappointing, for example, to hear of incidents taking place in matches involving U9s, where the fun, enjoyment and the development of players should be the priority of all involved. To read a comment about a decision made by a young match official, “costing teams games”, in a development fixture involving 8 & 9 year old children (where the result is not published) makes me think that we have reached the point where a reset in the priorities of some clubs, coaches and spectators is urgently needed. This poor behaviour involves players, managers, coaches and spectators, including parents. These aggressive and unsavoury actions are widespread and are affecting all those who participate in the game. I am asking for the support of the football community in North Riding to take responsibility for helping us to eradicate poor behaviour from the game. Clubs - please reiterate your club’s values, and the expectations of behaviour you have of all those who represent your badge. Players - please respect your opponents and the match officials, accepting mistakes can and will happen during a game. Managers / Coaches - please model positive behaviours to your players and spectators. Win, lose or draw make sure you are a good representative of your club. Spectators - please offer support during the game to the players and match officials involved. Create an environment where the game is enjoyable. North Riding FA will continue to pursue those individuals and clubs who are ruining the game for others, as a result of their actions. We will deal with any reported discipline issues in the strongest way possible, by the means available to us. Over the coming months, we will be launching our own campaign to promote football being played in a positive environment and highlighting the unacceptable behaviours that need to be removed from the game. We have already recently launched our ‘Matchday Assistants’ initiative, where we are encouraging clubs to identify volunteers who can support in modelling good behaviours and help to provide a pleasant welcome to their opponents and match officials. It is clear that there must be significant improvements over the coming weeks and months and I hope that we can all work together to achieve this for the good of football in our county. Best Wishes, Steven Wade, North Riding FA CEO

So I'm a football coach, but what do I do? I give up my time every week to ensure your child has somewhere to go and play football, I create an 'atmosphere', a second 'family' where your child can feel safe and have a sense of belonging, I instill values, behaviours, beliefs, based on both mine and the Club's philosophies, which will help your child become not just a better footballer but a better person, I teach important life skills through each and every training session, drill, or game, I set the standard of the team/club, by being the first one there (an hour early) to set up, and the last one to leave (an hour later) tidying everything away, I message you to confirm attendance at training sessions and matches on a Monday - and again on Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday, and again on Saturday, I spend countless hours of my days 'chasing' parents/player's, for subs, paperwork, kit, etc... I put together training plans, team selections, kit order's, team social gatherings, sponsored events, money making activities all for the benefit of each child in that team, I begin planning the team for the weekend's match the moment training finishes, and the very second the match finishes I am planning for the next training session, I record the scorers, submit the results, file the paperwork, I am a teacher, a doctor, a counsellor, a role model, a 'big brother', an influencer, and so much more - and that's just for you and your child, I do ALL of the above every week, unpaid, whilst working awkward hours in a full time job, aswell as being a Dad, a Husband, a carer, I don't do this for thanks, I do this because I love football, because I love seeing player's grow each week - that's the reward, the thanks for me, I am a Grassroots Football Coach, but I am so much more ❤🖤⚽️ Steve Davies U14's & U11's Manager Hanney Youth FC

@surreyfa @SurreyCricketFd @FA what a privilege to be awarded for something I’m naturally passionate about. Giving sporting opportunities to the next generation so they can live better lives. It’s never actually about the sport itself but what the sport brings to their lives.

If Gareth Southgate was a grassroots coach...🤣 Right about now Gareth Southgate is putting a message out on his team’s WhatsApp group just confirming everyone is still available for the grassroots match at the weekend. 1 player replies instantly yes - he always does, a couple more are a bit more vague with a “should be Ok”. 4 more don’t reply, they never do of course but they always turn up. Another is dependant on his mum giving him a lift while another couple ask if we’re home or away
