Some of the earliest people of African descent in what is now the western United States, especially places like California, Texas, and New Mexico, came north from Mexico, then known as New Spain. Long before the United States expanded westward, people of African descent were already present in what is now the western part of the country through Spanish colonial networks. During the period when much of the Americas was under Spanish control, known as New Spain, Africans and their descendants lived, worked, and moved throughout regions that would later become places like Texas, California, Arizona, and New Mexico. These early Black individuals were not a single group with one experience. Some were enslaved, brought through the transatlantic slave trade into Spanish territories, while others were free and participated in colonial society as soldiers, settlers, craftsmen, and explorers. Spanish colonial systems, while still deeply unequal, sometimes allowed for different social mobility compared to British colonies, including the possibility of manumission and integration into mixed communities. One of the most important things to understand is that African presence in the Americas was not limited to the English colonies that later became the United States. In fact, Africans were part of expeditions, settlements, and everyday life across Spanish controlled lands as early as the 1500s. Some even took part in major explorations that mapped large parts of North America. Over time, their descendants became part of diverse communities that blended African, Indigenous, and Spanish heritage. As borders shifted and territories changed hands, many of these communities became part of the United States without ever moving. This means that African descended people were already rooted in these regions long before U.S. expansion, statehood, or the migration patterns most people are familiar with today.
