Does it ever feel like you’re falling just as you’re about to fall asleep? That sudden jolt that wakes you up with your heart racing isn’t unusual. This phenomenon is called a hypnic jerk (or sleep start). Let’s break it down: Many people have experienced the strange sensation of suddenly jerking awake just as they are about to fall asleep. This phenomenon, known as a hypnic jerk or sleep start, is a common and generally harmless occurrence that affects people of all ages. hypnic jerk is an involuntary muscle contraction that occurs during the transition from wakefulness to sleep, particularly during the first stage of sleep. It often feels like a sudden jolt or twitch involving the legs, arms, or the entire body. Some individuals may also experience a sensation of falling, tripping, or losing balance immediately before the jerk occurs. Why Do Hypnic Jerks Happen? The exact cause of hypnic jerks remains unclear. However, researchers believe they are linked to the brain’s adjustment as the body shifts from an alert state to a relaxed sleeping state. During this transition, muscle activity decreases, and the nervous system may occasionally misinterpret these changes, triggering a sudden muscle contraction.
