On March 12, 2003, U.S. Special Operations Forces finalized plans for Operation Anaconda in Afghanistan’s Shah-i-Kot Valley. The battle would reshape modern SOF doctrine, high, altitude combat, JTAC coordination, and joint operations under fire.

On March 5, 1966, "The Ballad of the Green Berets" by Staff Sergeant Barry Sadler reached number one on the U.S. charts. Sadler, a real Army Special Forces medic wounded in Vietnam, wrote the song during hospitalization. It became Billboard's top single for all of 1966.
