@lukeyism Among my current research threads is a paper on law and the "sovereign body" in Crop-Over. I'm looking at the plantation logic that persisted and its violence on the body, and how law/rules/plantation logics continue to regulate/shape Crop-Over, which is an emancipatory site.

Crop Over would be so much greater if it leaned out of its newer tourism & capitalism roots and leaned into its older roots of freedom, subversion, survival and resistance

I grew up thinking the UN was a powerful entity. I never thought I would be in for such a rude awakening.

@Be11OG Problem with that is that we feel a job is ours for life. Changes happen and you must be able to change as well. Things may require different eyes, skillsets etc. What about that young person not being able to pay their student loan, get a house or car or travel?

This topic has always been hit or miss because if someone has been doing the same job for 25 years(they’re good at it) should they just be replaced? At what about their mortgage, child’s tuition even a car loan?
Shamar Reece@SPReece_

Having a graduate in every household was a nice slogan but what is happening now is that there are no jobs for them. Also Milicent has been working in her job for 35yrs with school leavers certs and still cannot turn on a computer but she has a job or is someone superior.

@BigMeeish Not when the education system doesn’t encourage it and we outsource them. Also many aren’t jumping at the opportunities to be skilled artisans

@SPReece_ yeah but what degrees are they getting? we need engineers, cybersecurity experts, data scientists, nurses, doctors, plumbers, carpenters, stone masons, electricians & just broadly technically skilled people. less of the management/administrative class and more builders.

@MorrisMedici Oh yes we cannot forget the cronyism and nepotism as other layers of this rancid onion. You can be a political puppet/yardfowl and still get through without having a modicum of intelligence. Our school system is one of the vestiges of a colonial administration

@SPReece_ 2/Humans are rational; they go where things list: Why should our children enrol? They witness a plutocratic cronyocracy as the fastest growing, most powerful feature of the hustle culture of Caribbean life…destructive of any who oppose it; of which our schools are a feature!

@MorrisMedici We sent our children off to have a better life and continued ringing it in our ears: good education, get a good job and that mantra never changed even in the modern times and the edu system never changed either.

@SPReece_ That is because we are a people carried away by rhetoric and aesthetics: we think talking is doing. The hard work is building an economy from the bosom of a colonial plantation model we never abandoned. So we educate into an abyss, the greatest success of which is brain drain!

@MorrisMedici This. We were long indoctrinated since Emancipation that education was the key for upward social and economic mobility. Our ancestors saw how their former masters sent their offspring off to school and how fanciful they were and we did the same without proper guidance.
