Dal 1990 al 1992 dopo aver vinto un apertura ed un clausura con il Newell's Old Boys approda in Messico all'Atlas con risultati modesti e poi un 3° posto sempre in Messico con l'America. Nel 1997 torna in Argentina e vince il Clausura con il Velez. Nel 1998 approda in Europa all'Espanyol, si dimette dopo aver raccolto 5 punti in 6 gare per sedersi sulla panchina della nazionale argentina. Nel 2011 torna in Spagna al Bilbao, il primo anno riesce ad arrivare in finale di Coppa di Spagna ed in finale di Europa League perdendole entrambe, in campionato invece chiuderà con un 10° posto al primo anno e con un 12° posto al secondo anno. Quel Bilbao nelle coppe esprimeva davvero un calcio frizzante e bello da vedere ma in campionato la difesa era un disastroso colabrodo. Nel 2014-2015 arriva 4° con il Marsiglia e poi si dimette dopo la 1° giornata del campionato successivo dopo la sconfitta in casa contro il Caen. Dopo aver mandato a quel paese Lotito rimane in Francia e va al Lilla dove viene esonerato alla 13° giornata (12 punti in 13 gare). Nel 2018 approda al Leeds in championship. Nonostante avesse nettamente la squadra piu' forte del campionato il primo anno manca la promozione che arriva però l'anno successivo. Il primo anno in Premier fa un buon campionato chiudendo al 9° posto poi l'anno dopo viene esonerato dopo 26 giornate (appena 23 punti). Dopo il Leeds siede sulla panchina dell'Uruguay arrivando 3° nella Copa America 2024, i rapporti con i giocatori si deteriorano e questo mondiale rischia di trasformarsi in un clamoroso fallimento.
