Film literacy among young people is at an all time low. My gen z students are shockingly unfamiliar with many key landmarks of modern cinema that were released in the 1990s

@st_louis_stan This is why it's the best of his Batman movies. The climax is Batman running around with a bomb just like in the Adam West feature.

The ending of The Valley of Gwangi is so messed up that I'm wondering who was the guy with massive problems (for the record O'Brien's ending had Gwangi being driven off a cliff by a truck)

@FredTaming the real reason it's wrong is that there have been at least a few humans born since that picture was taken

@vurnt22 X: The Man with X-ray Eyes is a classic Corman bit of Lovecraftian horror.

2 other Cosmic Horror films that, imo, are deeply Lovecraftian in tone, if not text? Carpenter’s The Thing, & Cronenberg’s The Fly. BTW? I’m sorry but Hellraiser is more on the mark than From Beyond. In your mind, hear Pinhead intoning “Humans are such easy prey!”. And weep.

@KaijuPictures I only recently saw the flying footage for the first time. Always wondered about those wings as a kid myself.

I finally got round to watching Reptilicus (specifically the English version) and it’s definitely a stinker. The many mostly uninteresting characters are mostly performed either poorly or just fine and the story takes a while to get going with plenty of padding in the first half.

Still, the Danish setting/production is one of the few notable things about the film. Reptilicus is pretty generic personality-wise but his regeneration adds an interesting dilemma. Weird he has wings yet doesn’t use them. Otherwise, okay design but poor execution.

@mcfc_son @intothecrevasse Ok, but From is the only thing on MGM+ that interests me, and I don’t really want to subscribe to yet another service for just one show. Seems like a bit of a problem to me.

Just because a show is on a less known streaming platform doesn’t mean it reflects what’s gone wrong with TV. Niche audiences exist for a reason, some series thrive precisely because they aren’t tied to mass market hype. If someone’s excited for the new season of From, that just means the show has found its fans. Fragmentation isn’t necessarily a problem, it’s more choice, more diversity and a chance for unique storytelling that wouldn’t survive on traditional networks. Not every cultural touchstone needs to be a barroom conversation starter.

Nicolas Cage says he found ‘Godzilla Minus One’ was “even more stunning” in black & white. “When Godzilla Minus One came out in Japan, I saw it in color. I thought it was stunning. But it was even more stunning when they reissued it in black and white. It looked like an old Godzilla movie. I thought that was really beautiful that I could experience it both ways.” (source: esquire.com/entertainment/…)

I hate to tell some people this, but a guy saying "heavier than air flight is impossible" 150 years ago is not, in fact, a very good reason to think relativity must have some loophole that will yield to us if we wax poetic about the Human Spirit insistently enough.
