H.R. 1 created ineffective & bureaucratic work requirements in Medicaid & expanded them in SNAP. Many people participate in both programs, but the requirements overlap in some ways & differ in others. If that makes your head spin, here's how states can streamline & simplify:
Center on Budget@CenterOnBudget

People with low incomes risk losing health coverage or food assistance under new Medicaid and SNAP work requirements, and states should use shared data and streamlined processes to reduce administrative burden and keep eligible people enrolled. cbpp.org/research/healt…

Republicans claimed H.R. 1's deep SNAP cuts would "incentivize a more efficient & effective program," by which they apparently meant "forcing low-income families to go months without food assistance because they can't get through on overloaded phone lines or get help in person."

More than 400,000 Arizonans have lost their SNAP benefits since July — the largest decline in the nation by a wide margin — after the state implemented changes called for in Trump’s so-called One Big Beautiful Bill Act. propublica.org/article/arizon…

The Republican megabill’s deep cuts to SNAP are already costing ppl food assistance -- 2.5M fewer ppl received SNAP between the law’s enactment in Jul 2025 & Dec 2025. New @CenterOnBudget interactive tracks the decline in SNAP participation in every state: cbpp.org/research/food-…

Last July, the Republican megabill (H.R. 1) enacted the deepest SNAP cuts in history. Today, we're releasing a tracker of how many people in each state are losing the SNAP benefits they need to afford groceries. cbpp.org/research/food-…

Doesn’t have to be just a factional project: there is lots of space for a broad coalition to take back state capacity from vendors and nonprofits who make money to perpetuate public sector dysfunction.

I think Zohran's co-opting of efficiency from the right will be seismic for the American socialist project. We need to run a national campaign against The Contractor State—neoliberalism's grand, massively inefficient outsourcing of government functions to private contractors.

@LukeCerpinTaxt I’m okay with one year if he doesn’t double shift the power play anymore

It would suck for Ovi to retire a non-playoff year but I think it's time. The team is, unfortunately, better without him. I still think the best idea is he goes to the KHL then joins the Caps next season's playoff push but understand that's probably hopeful wishing.

Frank Seravalli: Re Alex Ovechkin future: I do believe that part of the decision to move away from John Carlson was in part to send that message, that hey, it's time, the guard is changing here, we've got young players who are knocking at the door - Big Show (3/20)

The Replacements bucked at playing nice with industry figures, purposely tanked do-or-die shows, and antagonized producers until they quit. No wonder it took them decades to get their due pitchfork.com/thepitch/1042-…

All men and women, especially Christians, are called to fix their gaze on those who suffer, on the pain of the lonely, and on those who are emarginated for various reasons, for without them we cannot build a just society. Only together can we build communities of solidarity capable of caring for everyone, in which wellbeing and peace can flourish for the benefit of all. Caring for the humanity of others helps us to live our own lives to the full.

There is something states can do right now that could make them far more recession-ready: raise the maximum weekly benefit amount. See replies for article.

@StefFeldman I'd think they'll run on keeping some targeted tariffs but ditching a lot of them.

I think 2028 Dem presidential candidates WON'T run on reversing Trump's tariffs 👀 There's so little revenue to spend and they will decide other options are more impactful
Colin Wilhelm@colinwilhelm

@StefFeldman @mattyglesias I realize 2028 is still a ways away, but do you expect Dem candidates to run on undoing most/all of the Trump tariffs?

Great reporting on the Washington Post’s conundrum in the last 15 months. TLDR: - we have to follow the data - we have to follow the data - “Mr Bezos, the data says that single-handedly canceling a political endorsement will be catastrophic for the business” - “I don’t care” - [three seconds later] we have to follow the data

My latest showing that the Administration's attacks on Minnesota's anti-poverty programs is pure political vendetta: they are among the better-run in the country, far better than those of red states (e.g., Florida) that the Administration ignores. news.bloomberglaw.com/legal-exchange…
