Chapter Four Uganda@chapterfourug·
On this World Radio Day, we celebrate the enduring power of radio in shaping societies and the successes of our partnership with @TRACFM to engage over 60,000 radio listeners in Uganda about their perceptions on respect for the freedom of peaceful assembly, expression and association. We thank all civil society and media partners who actively participated in the 44 talk shows hosted by the 11 partner radio stations. We can’t wait to publish the final report of our findings! Going forward, we need to collectively do more to bridge the gap between online and offline human rights advocacy, defend editorial independence and the rights of journalists and media workers working with radio stations, and fast track the migration of radio to digital broadcast. Happy World Radio Day! #Uganda

In Uganda, radio talk shows provide a crucial platform for citizens to voice their opinions, with millions tuning in weekly. @TRACFM , our partner, attracts 20,000 responses, via both text messages and phone calls, weekly and reaches millions of listeners. However, the manual processing of thousands of text messages and phone calls is resource-intensive. By partnering with TRAC FM, Sunbird AI aims to improve citizen engagement. Our AI-powered transcription and translation technology promises to convert feedback into applicable data, enabling a deeper understanding of public sentiment.

The Constitution of Uganda protects the freedom of association. Yet, 35% of our 13k #SautiStream radio poll respondents say it’s too expensive to register groups, while others struggle with confusing rules or lack trust to form or join a registered group. What challenges do you see in your community? #HumaRightsUG

The 4th poll question under the Freedom of Expression, Association, and Assembly #SautiStream radio campaign was: "What is the biggest challenge you face in forming or joining a registered group in your community?" Under Uganda's Constitution (Article 29), freedom of association guarantees the right to form or join groups—whether informal savings associations, trade unions, or civic organizations—so long as the activities are legal. Yet, 13k respondents revealed significant challenges, with large regional differences. Is it the cost, confusing rules, or lack of trust? For instance, rural communities, like SACCOs or local vendors' groups, face hurdles due to bureaucracy or intimidation. Why do you think these barriers vary by region? Let's discuss it! #HumanRightsUG #SautiStream

In our latest #SautiStream radio poll, conducted in partnership with @ChapterFourUG and @cipesaug, we asked Ugandans about the biggest challenges they face in forming or joining registered groups in their communities. With freedom of association protected under Uganda’s Constitution, it’s crucial to examine whether bureaucratic barriers, costs, or trust issues hinder citizens—especially at the grassroots level—from organizing. Are these challenges limiting participation in decision-making and democracy? #HumanRightsUG

A big thank you to everyone who attended our Sauti Stream X-Space on "Bridging the Gap Between Online and Offline Activism." Your engagement, questions, and ideas made it a truly insightful conversation! Missed the discussion or want to revisit it? Catch the recording here: bit.ly/49Hhn16 [Skip to 8:45] We still need your thoughts on this critical question: What steps can individual activists take to make their work more representative of the broader population? How can we ensure that local voices, especially from rural areas, are included in online activism? Share your answers using the hashtag #SautiStream, and let’s keep amplifying every voice! #HumanRightsUG

13k Ugandans responded to our #SautiStream radio poll asking what they think of online activists expressing their discontent on the internet. 51% feel represented, 21% are aware but don’t feel respected and 28% are unaware of online activism altogether. This means almost half of our respondents are excluded from online conversations. We’ve organized an X Space in partnership with @chapterfourug and @cipesaug to not only explore the role of digital activism in promoting freedom of expression but also discuss the challenges of inclusivity in Uganda’s activism. Set a reminder to join us here: bit.ly/online-offline… #HumanRightsUG

Qn: 📜Is social media activism a bubble? @drnwanyama: "It could be a bubble, often individuals can organize online activism. But there is gap between online experience and offline experience. Getting the online to offline is a challenge" #ActivismUG #HumanRightsUG
