Speaking at the Rotary District 9214 Conference and Assembly 2026 at Speke Resort Uganda, Equity Group Managing Director and CEO Dr James Mwangi called for bold, purpose driven leadership to shape Africa’s future. He reflected on the global economic system formed in the late 1940s when Africa had no voice, noting that the continent is now at a defining moment.
Drawing from Equity’s journey, Dr.Mwangi highlighted the importance of integrating social impact into business models. He noted that nearly 40% of loan defaults are driven by health shocks, prompting Equity Group Foundation to invest in healthcare through the Equity Afya brand, which now supports over 150 medical centres to build community resilience.
He also underscored Equity’s commitment to human capital development, citing 60,009 scholarships awarded, over 2.4 million women and youth trained in financial literacy, more than 5.9 million people reached through social protection initiatives, 3.8 million farmers supported, and 962,924 MSMEs trained in entrepreneurship.
These efforts, he said, are anchored in Equity’s purpose of transforming lives, restoring dignity and expanding opportunities for wealth creation, while advancing sustainability. Equity has facilitated the planting of over 44.6 million trees and distributed more than 542,830 clean energy products, contributing to climate resilience.
Recognised as Africa’s strongest and most valuable financial brand, Equity continues to reinvest in society by allocating 2% of its annual revenue to social impact initiatives. Dr.Mwangi reaffirmed the Group’s commitment to partnerships that drive inclusive growth, noting that Africa’s future will be defined by the choices made today.
