Authentic observation on entertainment and culture that is hopefully relatable but nuanced. https://t.co/XaR59dWuug

@DCTalks1009 I have not claimed that people will never change. I'm usually just making observations. "I have noticed XYZ. Here are my thoughts, what I like and dislike, theories and musings." That's my whole thing.

@TheExilesNet It doesn’t make me happy. It’s a waste of time from someone who has a lot more to offer than complaining about how people talk who will never change. I find so much worthy of engaging on here outside of that.

In the past week I saw Hoppers, Project Hail Mary, and revisited John Wick 4. I’ve seen the public responses to the first two in theaters but formed my own views. I’ve been very happy with all. If all you do is police/pick apart discourse, you will *not* be happy.

🧵 This is not a direct comment about OP, but I notice that people who complain the most about "how horrible things are right now" also say things like this. They are often a proponent of "Whimsy not being cringe". It's just toxic positivity with extra steps. 1/3

@TheExilesNet Criticisms and attempts to address "modern cynicism" are worthless because they don't engage with why people are so "cynical" or why they find that a better response. I also agree those making these claims are far more cynical and insincere than those they criticize.

Ashley Talks Comics!@ComicGirlAshley

"It's a deconstruction of the superhero genre", "It's satire", "If superheroes were realistic" and then it's actually just pretty standard capeshit but edgy

@TheExilesNet I have to admit I've kind of avoided *those* shows as their edgy reputation precedes their deconstructive value in my head. I may be missing something but it's like they devalue that realism and contribute to hopecore propaganda

Bane creator Graham Nolan on James Gunn's Superman movie: "Superman has one histrionic outburst after another and wonders why he’s mistrusted? Way too beta. His parents are from Kansas and sound and act like they were inbred in Kentucky. It’s a narrative mess as scenes jump confusingly. Too many characters with no intro to who they are. I know Steve Lombard’s background but a normy doesn’t. Perry White smokes a cigar with no smoke or ash Calling fight plays during a fight? That’s idiotic. We never see Metamorpho do anything to break up the war at the end, yet there he is all of a sudden. I have one unbreakable rule when it comes to movies and entertainment: make me care! I’ll buy all kinds of bullshit you are selling if I care about the characters and stakes. For SUPERMAN…I didn’t care." Is he right?

Actual "Edge", to me, is like the anti-whimsy. It's when a story takes itself intensely seriously, deals with uncomfortable material in a sustained manner with no relief and no clean prescribed resolution. It's another aspect of sincerity that has fallen out of vogue. 3/3

I think very few things that come out are actually edgy. They all occupy a very safe threshold. Even shows like The Boys barely committed to being edgy for much more than a season. Nowadays if you have a character looking sad at nighttime they consider that "edgy". 2/3

Real talk, but the un-critical response to Project Hail Mary is just making me even more emboldened and excited to be undergoing a thesis that will explore the aesthetic distinction between irony and sincerity in genre cinema right now.

God forbid that if the scene stands out it's because it was a career defining performance instead of just a slightly better scene in an extremely safe and middling movie. 2/2

🧵 Anyone who talks regularly about superhero movies is going to talk about scenes in isolation, especially on Twitter. Everyone is going to glaze a movie for a character saying a line or striking a pose in a single scene that is disconnected from the rest of the narrative. 1/2
CraftyAdrian@CraftyAdrian360

You guys have to understand the concept that movies can have well written and emotionally impactful scenes in isolation but those scenes are fundamentally ruined and or not supported well by the scenes that came before that undermine or break the narrative. Example:

The way the cast keeps putting emphasis on how “the last scene we filmed was the last scene of the show” is kinda sus because why do they keep repeating this even when it’s not the question? And why does it always feel like they talk around the question when they’re asked about the ending/new content? They’re not dumb. They know why we didn’t like it, why it was weird for Vickie to be excluded from the epilogue, but they keep “playing dumb” and saying they liked how it ended
🩷@dailyrovickie

Maya Hawke talking about rovickie being excluded in the end... I'm glad she can understand our perspective at least

Even if you did that, it would require a storyteller who has a deep understanding of all of the events before and after the moment of introduction for the story to feel whole and integral and not like constant engagement farming. 4/4

I think there is a false comfort in the idea that you can and should just drop the audience in the middle of this comic book universe and that new and old fans will accept and enjoy it. 3/4
