@Sh3baSpaniel The problem with 1923-1929 Bukharin is that it is really hard (if not impossible) to separate him from Stalin. They were essentially aligned on all of the worst elements of Soviet politics at the time (SIOC, approach to internal opposition, asinine economic policy).

I also meant the St.-Petersburger Straße in Dresden, not Carolastraße. Probably mixed it up because the (now former) Carolabrücke connects it with Carolaplatz.

@sunmihoe @horizonpilgrim Ok, but this is straight up not true. The common areas in socialist realist parts of Warsaw are generally full of people (can't speak of Nowa Huta [which is in the photo] since I was only there as a tourist). The modernist districts aren't really that bad either.

This urbanism isn't even exclusive to the socialist period. It was also done in Western Europe and it was largely a failure

@FurioserK From the photos, those smaller avenues don'tseem as bad. Of course in some cases you could make them more narrow, but the idea of routing trams, necessary car traffic, buses, etc. through a handful of arterial avenues is reasonable.

@TheSpaceSoviet Yes and the Karl-Marx-Allee was used as a model for development elsewhere in the DDR. You have the Brückenstraße and Straße der Nationen in Chemnitz, Carolastraße in Dresden, Breiter Weg in Magdeburg, etc. that all look and work like this, albeit on a smaller scale.

@horizonpilgrim I don't know much about Berlin, but a cursory Internet search told me that most of the tiled commieblocs alongside it were built from 1959 onwards, due to budgetary constraints making the decorative style that I'd associate with socialist realism unfeasible.
