The reason I feel so strongly about preserving access to transition for rare genuinely dysphoric teenagers is I know firsthand how the developmental damage of gender dysphoria cripples you for the rest of your life. Here’s how the psychology works. Children are developing a sense of self from 4 to 7. This is also the years where they start understanding gender. When you shame a child and forced them to act like someone they are not, the self splits. This sets the child up for a cascade failure at each developmental step. From 8-11, you’re not learning to relate to others. You’re learning how to fake being someone else so you can relate to others and are consumed with shame when you make mistakes and genuinely express yourself. And this is without even getting into the horror of going through male puberty. I spent those years trying to kill myself, and I’m reasonably shocked. I did not succeed. Ignore all the painful, expensive plastic surgery I’ve had to get. Ignore the years of using every drug I could get my hands on just trying to numb those feelings. Just focus on that developmental damage. You can’t come back from it. I should know, I’ve done therapy. I’ve done ketamine. I’ve had massive success as an adult. It does not repair this. Part of me is just missing and damaged and it hurts all the time, even in my 40s. It’s like you can sense the real version of you that exists free from this trauma, but you cannot reach her. You just go through life as this broken version of yourself. There is no issue I care more about than sparing the next generation of trans children this pain. You cannot be a good human being and decide that trans children are disposable. It cannot be all or nothing policy. We have to design a system to get the right children the right help.
