Edinburgh University, the 16th century new kid on the block, was founded by the town council. The real Scottish ancients — St Andrews, Glasgow and Aberdeen — were all established by Papal Bull in the 15th century.

@afneil @UofGlasgow And here’s another wee gem, in 1583 when Edinburgh University opened it became the sixth University in what we now call Great Britain. Four of the six were in Scotland. Not bad eh. John Knox’s “school in every parish” strengthened the foundations already laid.
