I recently had the opportunity to write a feature article for my client, @menshealthfdn, titled "Sideways: The Bus Crash That Haunted a Hockey Team for Decades." The article explores the 1986 Swift Current Broncos bus tragedy and the 2025 documentary, "Sideways", that tells its story and more importantly, the long mental health journey of the young men who lived through it. At its core, this is a story about men's mental health, trauma, suicide prevention and the lifelong power of connection and dialogue. What made this experience especially meaningful for me was interviewing former NHL player and Swift Current Broncos survivor @igotmind & @sputzlocher, the producer behind Sideways. Their honesty and vulnerability underscored how deeply stigma around mental health still runs among men and boys, in sports and beyond. As someone deeply involved in suicide prevention through my work with Canadian Association for Suicide Prevention, this project taught me a great deal about the importance of creating space for men and boys to talk openly about struggle. When we normalize difficult conversations — especially in traditionally stoic environments like hockey — we help dismantle stigma and build healthier, more connected communities.
