Many New Testament names were adapted (Matthew, Jonathan, Judas, etc) in ways to distance them from their original Hebrew context and from the Jewish people. His actual Hebrew name is Yehoshua. I have just spoken with Lebanese President Joseph Aoun and Prime Minister Nawaf Salam.
