Edwin Sifuna
From Raila's Right Hand to Political Outcast
Few figures in Kenyan politics have had a career as dramatic as Edwin Watenya Sifuna's ,a rapid rise to the top of one of the country's biggest parties.
The Early Years
Born on May 22, 1982, in Kakamega County to a working-class family ,his father a civil servant with the defunct Municipal Council, his mother a teacher. He studied law at the University of Nairobi, graduating in 2006, and was admitted to the Roll of Advocates in 2008. Before politics, he built a legal career, eventually founding his own firm, E. Sifuna & Associates Advocates.
Entry Into Politics
Sifuna's path into politics began through technical and advisory roles in the Coalition for Reforms and Democracy (CORD), and later the National Super Alliance (NASA) (Ringier AG) — both built around opposition leader Raila Odinga. In 2017, he made his first real bid for elected office, running for the Nairobi Senate seat. He lost, polling 674,056 votes (42.51%) against winner Johnson Sakaja's 811,826 (51.20%), but the close contest raised his national profile significantly.
Rising to ODM Secretary-General
On February 23, 2018, Sifuna was picked as Secretary-General of ODM, replacing Ababu Namwamba. In his mid-30s at the time, he became one of the youngest people to hold such a powerful party post. Known for his sharp tongue and combative media appearances, he became ODM's chief defender , praised by supporters for his loyalty and clarity, criticized by opponents for deepening polarization.
Winning the Senate
Sifuna didn't give up on elected office. In the 2022 General Election, he won the Nairobi Senate seat with 716,876 votes , and was later named Deputy Minority Whip in the Senate.
The Fallout
Everything changed after the "broad-based government" arrangement between President Ruto and Raila Odinga , a deal Sifuna publicly rejected. Tensions worsened further after Raila's death in October 2025, which deepened the rift between Sifuna and the government-aligned wing of ODM. On February 11, 2026, Sifuna was removed as Secretary-General by ODM's National Executive Committee in his absence. He fought back ,petitioning the Political Parties Disputes Tribunal, which temporarily blocked his removal the next day.
Where He Stands Now
Since his ouster, Sifuna has taken his fight to the streets, leading rallies like the "Linda Mwananchi Tour," drawing large crowds and allied leaders including Governor James Orengo and MP Babu Owino (GreenCoaching) . He remains Nairobi's sitting senator and has signaled he intends to run for re-election in 2027 .
Ten years after joining ODM's inner circle, Sifuna's story has become a case study in how quickly power can shift in Kenyan politics.
