April 2026 is Fair Housing Month April 7 the commissioners were joined for the Fair Housing Month proclamation ceremony by Housing Rehabilitation Program Coordinator Davida Washington and local construction partners Donelle Davis (ADJ Home Improvement), James Brown (Poseidon Plumbing and Home Services), and Curtis Mercer (Curtis Mercer Remodeling LLC). They are among the many local contractors whose vital contributions support the county's Housing Rehabilitation Program. Fair housing means every individual has the right to buy a home, rent an apartment, and obtain homeowners’ insurance without bias. It also ensures that individuals with disabilities can request reasonable accommodations, such as service animals or accessible parking, to support independent living. For decades, Worcester County has worked to strengthen our communities through initiatives, like the Housing Rehabilitation Program, which has helped rehabilitate or replace more than 300 homes since 1987—providing safe, suitable housing and expanding opportunities for residents across the county. This progress would not be possible without the pivotal partnership of local contractors, whose expertise and commitment bring these projects to life. Together, we can continue building open, welcoming communities where everyone has the opportunity to thrive.

Public invited to May 5 hearing on proposed FY27 water and wastewater rate increases The public is invited to attend a hearing on proposed water and wastewater rate changes for fiscal year 2027. The hearing will take place May 5 at 6 p.m. in the Commissioners Meeting Room in the Worcester County Government Center in Snow Hill. Rate increases are proposed in 10 of the County’s 11 water and wastewater sanitary service areas (SSAs). No changes are proposed for the West Ocean City SSA. Proposed changes include an increase of about five percent to the base fee—the fixed charge customers pay regardless of water use—as well as updates to how water usage is billed for both residential and commercial customers. These adjustments are intended to keep up with rising costs to operate, maintain, and improve the systems that provide clean water and wastewater treatment. Those who wish to speak or attend the public hearing in person are encouraged to call County Administration at 410-632-1194 to pre-register. Comments may also be submitted to wchearing@worcestermd.gov on or before 4:00 p.m. May 4. For detailed information about rates in each of the 11 service areas, proposed rate adjustments, and answers to frequently asked questions, visit co.worcester.md.us/departments/pu….

Residents Invited to Review the Draft 2026 Worcester County Comprehensive Plan Worcester County residents are encouraged to review and provide feedback on the draft 2026 Comprehensive Plan and Land Use Map, a guiding document that will shape the County’s future growth and development. On March 4, 2026, the Worcester County Planning Commission submitted the draft Comprehensive Plan to the State of Maryland, where it will undergo a 60-day review. The Comprehensive Plan serves as the County’s long-term roadmap, informing decisions related to land use, zoning, transportation, housing, environmental protection, and infrastructure. “This document is the culmination of two years of planning efforts,” Development, Review and Permitting Director Jennifer Keener said. “Public participation has been a priority throughout the process, from the strong turnout reflected in the 2023 Public Engagement Report to the feedback collected through surveys accompanying each draft chapter.” View the draft plan online at: co.worcester.md.us/comprehensive-… Residents may submit written comments online at arcg.is/1i1SOy or by mail to: Department of Development, Review and Permitting One West Market Street, Room 1201 Snow Hill, MD 21863 Additional opportunities for public input will be available following the State’s review. The Planning Commission will conduct a public hearing before making a recommendation on the plan. A separate public hearing will then be scheduled with the Worcester County Commissioners prior to adoption by resolution. County officials encourage all residents to take part in the process. The plan may be updated to reflect community feedback before it is finalized.

This week the commissioners had the privilege to recognize the extraordinary courage and teamwork displayed by four dedicated public safety professionals who saved a life during a house fire in Pocomoke City on December 28, 2025. When the call came in, Pocomoke City EMS Paramedic Deyton Dean, Pocomoke City Volunteer Fire Company Firefighters Tommy Wall and Christian Martin, and Pocomoke City Police Officer Chris Barrs were the first to arrive on scene. Acting quickly and working together under dangerous conditions, Officer Barrs forced entry into the home, while Paramedic Dean conducted a search of the first floor. As flames threatened the stairwell, Firefighter Martin used a fire extinguisher to contain the fire, allowing Dean and Firefighter Wall to reach the second floor, locate the trapped occupant, and safely evacuate that individual from the home. Because of their swift actions, coordination, and bravery, a life was saved. Please join us in thanking these outstanding public safety professionals for their courage and commitment to protecting our community.
