This afternoon I was privileged to host @FCDOMattBaugh, the incoming High Commissioner of @UKinKenya who paid a courtesy call on @KenyaMissionUK as he prepares to start his Tour of Duty in Nairobi. We reflected on our enduring relationship; acknowledged the expectations to make it thrive; and committed to make the necessary adaptations to deliver the #StrategicPartnership #GoFarGoTogether. Karibu Kenya Balozi! Asante @edwardabarnett for the impactful #RunningTogether. Onwards and upwards 💪🏿🙏🏿 @SingoeiAKorir @ForeignOfficeKE @MusaliaMudavadi @OfficePCS_KE

It was a great evening at the Residence of the British High Commission in Nairobi last evening, hosted by the Chargé d’Affaires Ed Barnett. Apart from providing an excellent networking moment with colleagues across industries, it was an opportunity to reflect on a partnership that has continued to deliver real value to Kenya and the UK. The UK–Kenya Strategic Partnership has been gaining significant momentum, spanning green growth, trade, security and digital innovation. Tangible impact includes over £100M in digital economy investments, duty-free market access, sustainable energy projects, as well as transformative infrastructure. It is encouraging to see diplomacy translating into opportunity, investment and shared progress through a partnership worth celebrating and watching closely.

This evening, at the historic Canterbury Cathedral, the seat of Christianity in England since 597 AD when St. Augustine was sent by Pope Gregory the Great, a historic moment will unfold. The Most Revd and Rt Hon Dame Sarah Mullally will be installed as the 106th Archbishop of Canterbury, becoming the first woman in over 1,400 years to occupy the seat of St. Augustine and serve as Primate of the Church of England. Ordained as a priest in 2002 and consecrated as a bishop in 2015, Sarah Mullally has steadily risen through the ranks of the Church, most recently serving as the Bishop of London, one of its most senior and influential positions. Her installation marks not just a personal milestone, but a profound moment in the history of the Anglican Communion, signaling both continuity of tradition and the evolution of the Church in modern times. The ceremony will follow centuries old tradition. In line with custom, the Archbishop-designate will symbolically knock on the great West Door of the Cathedral before being formally received. The service will be strictly liturgical, solemn, symbolic and without speeches. It is expected to last less than an hour. The event is expected to be attended by members of the British royal family led by the Prince and Princess of Wales, Prime Minister Kier Starmer, senior clergy and global dignitaries, underscoring its global significance. **************************************************** Fun Facts ✅ Christianity in England dates back 1,400 years, beginning with St. Augustine’s mission in 597 AD. By then, Ethiopia had already been a Christian kingdom for over 250 years (since around 340 AD), making it one of the oldest Christian nations in the world. Christianity reached parts of North Africa even earlier. Egypt traces its Christian roots to the 1st century (43 AD) through St. Mark. ✅If the installation of the Archbishop were to be held in Kenya, let’s just say “strictly liturgical, no speeches” would be politely ignored, and we would be there for a solid 6 hours minimum. Today’s occasion will take about 45 minutes. Not even Prince William or the Prime Minister will speak🙊

It's now possible to walk from Westminster to the Tower entirely along the north riverbank (only straying a few metres to go beneath bridges). First time in London's history this has been possible. Details on link londonist.substack.com/p/an-historic-…

We had a productive engagement with the British High Commission delegation, led by Political Counsellor Ms. Nerys Cross Smith. They are assessing UK-funded programmes like Inclusive Digital Futures, supporting digital skills, jobs, and entrepreneurship for youth, women, and PWDs. We’re also partnering on a least-cost energy plan, while emphasizing strong institutions for democracy and rule of law.

While having dinner tonight, my 15 year old son asked me this question: “what was the highlight of your day?” My mind immediately went to a meeting I had earlier today with a 21 year old Kenyan student studying in the UK. She had eleven questions for me. Three of them were particularly interesting. She wondered how I was balancing a very busy schedule with my personal life that includes being present for my family. This was a very strong feedback and an #accountability statement: that no matter how busy you are at work, the family too deserves to have your attention. Our conversation surfaced #Intentionality and #Quality as key to the choice-making. Her second question was quite inspiring: “How can young people like myself be useful to our country while still here?” It’s clear that they care. They want to, and are ready and willing to make their contribution. This question led us to talk about the role of #Diaspora as ambassadors of Kenya across cultures, ideologies and geographies on the one hand. On the hand, they need to share their experiences with relatives and friends back home about the reality of living abroad and correcting distorted perceptions while reinforcing positive feedback on the country. Apparently, there is a dominant view that anyone abroad has it easy and abundant! Her third question was about understanding investment opportunities in Kenya and Africa for young people like herself who desire to invest generationally. At this point I ushered in Dr. Beth Waweru who was the next in my calendar. Dr. Waweru is on Investment Specialist with the UN Joint SDG Fund. We were able to establish a mentor - mentee relationship which I believe will not only benefit the two committed professionals but our country as well. Conversations like this not only inspire, they reinforce our confidence in the future. #YouthCares #LeadingYoung #PlentyWithinOurBorders @bethsnowy @KenyaMissionUK @InvestKenya_ @roselinenjogu @Diaspora_KE @pthigo

Already a big challenge this afternoon, as we expected, and even more so with the rain that fell in the first stage. Obviously, we would have hoped to be a bit closer tonight, but given the conditions we can be happy to be only a minute off the lead. We can't control the weather so the only thing we can do is not give up. It's going to be a long weekend, very rough and demanding, and I'm sure many things will still happen. O/A after day 1⃣ 1. Solberg 2. Evans +33.3s 3⃣ OGIER +1'05.1 4.
